Historical Fiction

My latest historical, Neighbours at War (Neighbors at War) is my second book set during the Occupation in Jersey, Channel Islands (think The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society) and is inspired by the story of a young, pregnant woman who runs away from her family in London’s East End to stay with her aunt in Jersey weeks before the Nazis invade the island. The houses where the neighbours live are where my own great-grandmother and great-aunt lived during the Occupation.

The Poppy Sisters was an Amazon First Reads Editor’s Pick in 2023. This book is the story of two sisters during World War One when, after a family tragedy, one leaves her job and joins the Voluntary Aid Detachment looking after British soldiers in France, and the other already nursing in Jersey, is transferred to care for German soldiers in the prisoner of war camp in St Ouen’s Bay. Lots of conflict, both within themselves and for what they face at such difficult times.

The Beekeeper’s War is set during WW1 and WW2 and is the story of two women and a secret that nearly destroys them.

An Island At War is a USA TODAY bestselling novel about two sisters separated by war when the youngest is evacuated just before the German Occupation of Jersey during World War Two and the older sister has to remain on the island to help run the family farm. Out in e-book, paperback, Large Print, and audiobook.

The three books in my Mrs Boots series inspired by the incredible life of Jersey woman, Florence Boot, the woman behind the Boots the Chemist empire (Walgreens in the US). Mrs Boots (Book 1) and Mrs Boots of Pelham Street (Book 2), and Mrs Boots Goes to War (Book 3) are out now in the usual formats and also Large Print.

The Poppy Field is also a USA TODAY bestseller and is a timeslip about two nurses living 100 years apart, Alice in 1918 and Gemma in 2018, and the property that links them.

The Dutch version of The Poppy Field, Een Veld Vol Klaprozen is published by HarperCollins Holland.

My debut First World War romance, Broken Faces is set during the Great War. It tells the story about four friends and how they cope when one of them receives life-changing injuries.
