I’m a little stunned – and delighted! – at having been contacted by two US readers telling me they’ve travelled to Jersey from the States because they read and loved An Island at War and wanted to visit locations from my book.
This book was set during the occupation of Jersey and written during the first lockdown. Although I was struggling about being separated from my two grown children, it helped me realise how lucky I was that although I couldn’t see them and didn’t know how long the lockdown would last – three years in the case of my son who I only recently caught up with – that at least I had constant contact with them and was living on a peaceful island and not one run by an occupying force. I also wasn’t starving, or many of the other hardships that the locals had to endure during that dark time in our history. I’m very grateful to have such wonderful readers and also that I’m living at a time when although the world can be a frightening place, Jersey is still a beautiful and lovely place to live.
