I write a synopsis before I start working on my first draft. It’s usually only a page or two long, but it helps me remember where I meant to go with my story when things begin to get a bit flabby at around 30,000 words.
I need to have the right names for my characters before I start writing. I decide what they look like, what their home is like and what they do for a living. It helps me visualize them when I write my first disorganized draft.
When I write my first draft, I try not to worry too much about using the right word, detailed description or detailed research. I just get the story down.
If this seems like too much, then detemine to write at least 100 words. I can (almost) guarantee that you’ll be inspired and keep going for many more words that you initially intend.
I like to see the how I’m progressing and this helps me keep going when I’m finding the first draft difficult to get down. I write the date and next to it how many words I’ve written and next to that a running total of my word count. It helps me write something each day.
